On the last Shabbat of the biblical year, as we were celebrating the holy supper with the congregation, just as I was distributing the bread and wine, there was a 6.5 magnitude earthquake that reached throughout the south of Ecuador, causing 13 deaths. When the walls and ceilings were moving from side to side, I ordered the congregation to praise Adonai with strength in heavenly tongues. I asked no one to run out of the house of prayer, stating that YHVH protects us and nothing will happen. Ruah HaKodesh brought (Psalms 46:2-3) to my mind: God is our refuge and strength, a very ready help in trouble. Therefore we will not fear, though the earth shakes and the mountains slip into the heart of the sea; though its waters roar and foam, Though the mountains quake at its swelling pride. And so it happened that not one glass was broken, and not even the pictures of Jerusalem on the walls fell – everything was completely normal. Glory be to Him!
